Tip 49: Observe Patterns Rather Than Isolated Behaviors
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Give us patience to observe infants carefully rather than making quick conclusions based on one difficult moment. Help us recognize patterns in their behavior, routines, emotions, and responses. Give caregivers wisdom to understand what infants may be communicating through repeated behaviors.
Amen.
Scripture Reflection (KJV)
“He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding.” — Proverbs 14:29
One difficult moment does not always tell the whole story. Infants may cry, refuse to feed, have difficulty sleeping, or become irritable for many different reasons. Looking for patterns over time can help caregivers better understand an infant’s needs and respond appropriately.
Practice / Task
Observe the infant over several days. Notice when a behavior occurs, what happens before it, and how the infant responds afterward. Ask yourself:
“Is this behavior happening repeatedly, or was it an isolated event?”
